Dua For Travel: Arabic, transliteration & meaning
Travelling often means stepping into the unknown.
Whether you are driving somewhere new, boarding a plane or beginning a long journey, Islam encourages us to begin by remembering Allah (SWT), asking for His protection and placing our trust in Him.
Here are some simple duas to keep with you on your travels.
Dua Before Leaving Home
Before setting out, say:
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ، لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ
Transliteration:
Meaning:
In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no power or strength except through Allah.
A simple reminder before you leave: prepare your journey, take the necessary steps, and trust Allah with what comes next.
Dua When Starting a Journey
When beginning a journey or boarding your transport, you can recite:
سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنقَلِبُونَ
Transliteration:
Subhanalladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin, wa inna ila Rabbina lamunqalibun.
Meaning:
Glory be to the One who has placed this transport at our service, though we could not have controlled it ourselves, and to our Lord we will return.
This dua can be recited when travelling by car, plane, train, ship or other transport.
Dua For Someone Who Is Traveling
If someone you love is leaving on a journey, you can say:
أَسْتَوْدِعُ اللَّهَ دِينَكَ وَأَمَانَتَكَ وَخَوَاتِيمَ عَمَلِكَ
Transliteration:
Astawdi‘ullaha dinaka, wa amanataka, wa khawatima ‘amalik.
Meaning:
This dua entrusts the traveller’s faith, well-being, and deeds to Allah.
A beautiful way to say:
Go safely and return safely.
Dua When Returning Home
When returning from a journey, the Prophet ﷺ would say:
آيِبُونَ، تَائِبُونَ، عَابِدُونَ، لِرَبِّنَا حَامِدُونَ
Transliteration:
Ayibuna, ta’ibuna, ‘abiduna, li-Rabbina hamidun.
Meaning:
We return, repenting, worshipping, and praising our Lord.
A journey begins by placing our trust in Allah.
And it ends by thanking Him for bringing us home.
Dua For Safe Travel
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also made dua asking Allah to make the journey easy and to protect both the traveller and those left behind.
You can ask Allah in your own words for:
- A safe and easy journey
- Protection from harm
- Protection for your family at home
- Goodness in your destination
- A safe return
Travel is also a beautiful time to make personal dua. Between busy airport queues and quiet moments on the road, take a moment to ask Allah for whatever is on your heart.
