A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck near Flores island and surrounding areas of East Nusa Tenggara on 15 August 2026, destroying homes and forcing families to flee.
The scale of the disaster has continued to grow as authorities reach more affected communities. As of 24 August, 100 people had been killed, more than 1,600 injured and around 180,000 displaced. Tens of thousands of homes have been damaged.
Thousands of aftershocks have followed the initial earthquake. Landslides have blocked roads, communities have been cut off and many families remain afraid to return to damaged homes.
For people who escaped with little more than the clothes they were wearing, the immediate needs are simple: somewhere safe to sleep, clean water to drink and enough food for their family.

The earthquake struck suddenly in the early morning, damaging homes, schools, health facilities and essential infrastructure across Flores.
Many families are now living in temporary shelters or tents near their damaged homes. Even where buildings remain standing, repeated aftershocks have left people fearful of going back inside.
The earthquake also triggered landslides across the region. In one section of the Trans-Flores road, debris and rocks almost 30 metres high completely blocked the route, temporarily cutting a major connection between Ende and Nagekeo.
