Build a Legacy for Ruqaya
Ruqaya left this world on May 25th, 2022, but her legacy lives on!
Little Ruqaya passed away and had a last wish before she left this world, “To help vulnerable young girls by sending the Dignity Packs that will let them take care of their personal hygiene.”
Many girls and young women in Bangladesh especially among the Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar find themselves in a very tough position when they menstruate. Many resort to running to the forests when they get their menstrual cycles as they have no means to take care of their personal hygiene!
This September marks Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Please help continue Ruqaya’s Legacy and donate to this fundraiser as we are not only raising funds for girls in Bangladesh but also for women and girls who are in urgent need of Dignity Packs in Pakistan after the floods left them homeless with no belongings.
HELP fulfil Ruqaya’s wishes by donating towards our Dignity Packs that will help millions of vulnerable young women and girls in Bangladesh and now in flood-affected areas in Pakistan!
What is included in these Dignity Packs?
Each Dignity Pack will include: Reusable Sanitary Pads, undergarments, towels, shampoo, bathing soap, coconut oil, washing detergent, toothbrush and toothpaste, deodorant, nail scissors, hair comb,…
The Reusable sanitary pads are hypoallergenic minimising any risk of infection for women. These products are essential for sisters and young girls who are sometimes forced to flee to the forest as they are embarrassed or ostracised in their societies due to their periods.
The Distribution of the first batch of Dignity Packs already started:
In 2018, when Ruqaya was only 16 months old, she was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer called Rhabdomyosarcoma which started in her pelvis and spread to her abdomen and lymph nodes.
Ruqaya underwent surgery and multiple chemotherapy rounds but her cancer was too aggressive and kept coming back!
In the end, Ruqaya’s little body surrendered to cancer and she passed away on May 25th, 2022 to join the birds of Paradise insh’Allah!
Ruqaya came into our office in Sydney alongside her mum Heba Shaheed, a women’s health advocate who was working with us to fundraise for Dignity Packs during Ramadan 2022. The Dignity Packs were dedicated to vulnerable and orphaned young girls and Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh. Ruqaya was soo excited about the project that she asked to join her mama and record a message in the video above along her side!
Ruqaya’s last wishes were to help her mummy fundraise for dignity packs for impoverished girls and women.
Reusable Pads as a form of Empowerment
Not only do reusable pads offer women the relief that they will never run out of sanitary pads but we are also teaching them how to sew these pads and turn them into a source of livelihood where they can sell those products insh’Allah.
There are so many more in dire need of these Dignity Packs so we need your help to raise more funds to reach millions of young women!
The Prophet (PBUH) said: ” I advise you to take care of the women, for they are created from a rib and the most crooked portion of the rib is its Upper part; if you try to straighten it, it will break, and if you leave it, it will remain crooked, so I urge you to take care of women.”Sahih Al-Bukhari
